Group discussion strategy is one of the fruitful ways towards effective learning. But if your students are engaging to group discussions for the first time, it might be difficult for them to feel interested in such kind of activity. Here I am speaking about learners of English as a second language (LESL). Hense, it is first essential to introduce students to this kind of activity by getting them watch how group discussion works. Give them some videos fot group discussions to watch other people discuss issues before asking them to practice it themselves. Then as ameans of encouraging and motivating students ask them to evaluate the speakers they watch in a video.

Now think of real life and interested topics to your students and ask them in small groups to speak about them. Learning the language can be a lot more natural and effective and students will enjoy the activity.
